Religious Sisters Appreciation Day (RSAD) is our largest annual event for religious sisters on both sides of the Missouri river. A relatively new congregation, the Benedictine Sisters of Mary Queen of the Apostles, located in their Priory of Ephesus in Kansas City, MO. Their mission: "Having received our call to emulate Our Lady in her final, hidden years, we offer our lives in prayer and sacrifice for priests".

Read more about these Sisters here, and see a video interview about them in the featured video to the right.

Building on Jim Wilson's overview of the major event of our history, we add more depth to some of the events he described. This issue of the website, featuring our Religious Sisters Appreciation Day and Religious Sisters generally, is an appropriate place to extend Jim Wilson's history of our Club.

Read this addition about the history of what was then known as the “Nun's Appreciation Day” here.

Briana Murphy, now Sister Kenesis

Briana Murphy before entering the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara

Three years ago, Briana Murphy, a parishioner from Olathe, approached the KCK Serra Club for help in pursuing a vocation to the religious life. Like most young people, Briana had incurred a large student loan. Our Serra Club supported Briana for the two years she worked with the Labouré Society to clear her debt.

Recently, John Coakley had the opportunity to meet with Briana (now Sister Kenesis) while she visited her family in Olathe. Read John Coakley's report of that visit here.

Financial Report of Serra KCK

For all members of Serra KCK: here is a summary of the Income and Expenses for our Serra Club for the Fiscal Year 2017-18 that just ended on June 30th. We almost matched our Income to Expenses. That may not be so easy for the current Fiscal Year since we lost 14 members and 10 died last Fiscal Year. Please ask your friends to consider joining the Serra Club and invite them to a lunch meeting.

You will find the report here.

As summer begins, the heat reminds us that we are in the Midwest, yet the Serra Club’s activities continue to thrive. June is the month we had our annual golf outing for the Sisters Servants of Mary.

God Moments

We evangelize each other by sharing personal stories of faith, the purpose of this section. Read the compelling story of faith by Gene Schreiner offered for this month.

In the 1980’s while I was working for IBM in KC I came down with bronchitis one winter after a cold. The Bronchitis seemed to hang on and on. After sometime I went to the doctor who confirmed I had a bad case of bronchitis and in addition to getting a prescription to treat it I was told that because of damage to my bronchial tubes I should be careful because I most likely would get bronchitis anytime I caught a cold.
